What started as a husband and wife simply wanting to help animals in need has grown into a mission dedicated to saving lives. The Ruffugees Foundation exists to bring homeless animals from hardship to health, safety, and ultimately loving homes.

Founded in 2017 in Virginia, The Ruffugees Foundation is a volunteer-run, federally recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit created by a husband-and-wife team who share a deep love and passion for animals and a commitment to helping those who cannot help themselves.

​

What began as a small effort to assist local shelters quickly grew into a broader mission focused on helping homeless animals reach safety and recovery. Today, The Ruffugees Foundation works to support animals in need through funding, fostering, transportation, and lifesaving care.

​

Across the United States, millions of animals face overcrowded shelters, illness, hunger, and abandonment. Our organization steps in where help is needed most—providing critical resources that give vulnerable animals the chance to survive, recover, and find loving homes.

​

Since our founding, the generosity of our supporters has allowed us to provide financial assistance and food donations to dozens of municipal and county shelters. Between 2019 and 2020 alone, we tripled the amount of food donated to shelters and rescue partners, helping ensure animals in need had reliable access to nourishment.

​

From 2017 through 2026, we also helped transport more than 60 animals from overcrowded shelters in Virginia to no-kill rescues in North Carolina, giving them a better chance at adoption and permanent homes. During that same time, we fostered 30 cats and dogs, providing them with safe, loving temporary homes while they waited for their forever families.

​

In 2026, we expanded our efforts by launching Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) initiatives to humanely reduce community cat overpopulation. Through trapping, spaying and neutering, medical care, and returning healthy cats to their colonies, we are helping improve the health and safety of both animals and the communities where they live.

As a volunteer-run organization, every donation directly supports our mission—funding medical care, food, transportation, spay and neuter services, and safe placements for animals in need.

Each year we continue working to expand our reach, assist more shelters, and save more lives. What began as a shared passion between two people has grown into a community of supporters dedicated to protecting and caring for animals who need it most.

Together, we are creating a future where more animals are safe, healthy, and loved.
